New Report Reveals Staggering Business Impact of Post-Processing After 3D Printing

Significant cost, time, quality and other consequences of post-processing limit broad commercial adoption of 3D printing

WOBURN, Mass. September 17, 2016 – Rize Inc., today announced the availability of a new report by renown 3D printing industry expert, Todd Grimm, outlining the significant and measurable impact of post-processing required after 3D printing in order to make a 3D printed part usable. The common perception of 3D printing is that it is a simple, fast, automated and free process.   • -Cost Impact – $100,000 – $500,000 annual labor cost, fully burdened, equating to $25,000 – $50,000 labor cost per machine, per year
  • -Time Impact – 17% – 100% increase over 3D printing time per batch, resulting in delays measured in weeks
  • -Quality Impact Post-processing results in inconsistent and inaccurate parts, as well as increased costs
  • -Staffing Impact – 1:1 – 1:3 ratio of machine operators to employees needed to post-process parts
  • -Facilities Impact – Additional ½ – 1 square foot for post-processing needed for each square foot of 3D printer space, plus equipment and utilities
  • -Operations Impact – 3D printers only operate at 60% utilization rate due to post processing bottlenecks
  • -Safety Impact – Use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials involved in post-processing are unsafe and costly
